This week on Global Notes, Jerome and Radio M host Tony Sarabia explore a drum from Brazil called the cuíca. It’s part of our occasional series “Musical Show and Tell,” in which we ask local musicians to stop by our studios, tell us about their favorite ethnic instrument and perform for us.
Used in the samba, Brazil’s national music, the cuíca is not just any drum. You don’t bang it with your hand or a drum stick. Instead, players rub a wet cloth inside the instrument, producing a surprising array of sounds. Chicago percussionist and Brazilian native Felipe Fraga explains the history of the instrument and shows us how it works. Performing with Felipe are musicians Silvia Manrique, on the shaker, Luciano Antonio, on guitar, and Edinho Gerber, also on guitar.
